Grab your pair of binoculars and head over to Munnar, a wildlife hotspot due to the mountainous evergreen forests of the Western Ghats. Housing over 200 species of birds this place is assured to leave the avid birder with rushes of adrenaline while spotting rare birds, some of which are endemic, making it a unique birdwatching experience. Except for monsoon when the area is really wet all other seasons offer a chance to spot the rare wildlife, as the climate is favorable with optimal temperature and moisture content in the air. Popular birding places include Rajamalai (Eravikulam National Park), Bodinayakanur etc. A walk through Eravilulam National Park will most likely give you a chance to view a variety of Warblers, Thrushes, and Eurasian Blackbird etc. Other birds spotted commonly include the Yellow throated Bulbul, the Whitebellied Treepie, etc. Birdwatching as a hobby requires patience and a sense of calm within oneself as the species that we look for are quite shy and do not show up at our doorsteps and try to live their quaint jungle life. Although a passion that will ensure this calm for the birder to see what he is waiting to get close to exists, Munnar gives the amateurs and beginners alike the experience with cool winds to greet you on your trail with just the right amount of sunlight keeping you warm during most of the months. Munnar is famous for sighting the endemics, some of which include the Nilgiri Wood Pigeon, the Nilgiri Pipit, Broadtailed Grassbird and Black and Orange Flycatcher among others.
